The 3 Chinese Tenors

The 3 Chinese Tenors are an internationally recognised ensemble that have inspired audiences across
Australia and South East Asia for over 20 years, performing the most beautiful and evocative classical
pieces ever written. The group was formed in the early 1990s when the three singers performed to
250,000 people as part of Australia’s bid to win the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Since then the group has
performed across Australia as well as in China, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

The 3 Chinese Tenors showcase a rich and diverse collection of classical and popular works including:
La donna e mobile (Verdi), O Sole Mio (Neapolitan), Nessun dorma (Puccini), Music of the Night (Webber), Funiculi Funicula (Neapolitan), The Prayer. In 2016, Christmas in July will also include timeless carols such as: We Three Kings, O Holy Night, Ave Maria, Panis Angelicus, Pieta, Signore.

The 3 Chinese Tenors was founded by Hao Zhou. Hao’s boyhood dream growing up in Chang Sha, China, was to study opera under Australia’s own Dame Joan Sutherland and sing at the Sydney Opera House. Aged 20, Hao bade farewell to Chang Sha to follow his dream, where found himself instead washing dishes in the Victorian Arts Centre, Melbourne, seemingly at a dead end. At least, in the
kitchen, the Italian cooks would sing Neapolitan folk songs and opera arias. One day, Hao unexpectedly burst into an impromptu performance of O Sole Mio, stunning his co-workers.

Management’s response was immediate. Within days, Melbourne’s media had christened Hao the
‘Kitchen Caruso’. Within a month, he was invited to sing at the Australian Vocal Symposium under the tutelage of none other than Dame Joan Sutherland, herself. From there, Hao became a principal operatic tenor with the Victorian State Opera and Opera Australia, and performed concerts
conducted by Maestro Richard Bonynge.

‘People are amazed that The 3 Chinese Tenors sing in Italian, French, German, English and Chinese, all
in the one program. We take our audiences on a musical journey across cultures and time. Our program combines a wide range of classical opera, Neapolitan, musical theatre, and storytelling into a single evening of laughter and enjoyment. In Christmas in July in 2016, we will blend in carols in a way no one else can”, says Zhou.

The 3 Chinese Tenors bring energy, passion, and operatic fireworks to the stage. They marry storytelling and humour with captivating music. A night spent in the company of these talented performers will have audiences “laughing one minute, in awe the next with their virtuoso… vocal
talents” (Gavin Box, Geraldton News, WA), enchanted by the beauty of the pieces, the power of the music, and the energy of the performers. Don’t miss The 3 Chinese Tenors.
